Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital travel document required for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or transiting through Canada by air. It is electronically linked to your passport and is typically valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Most travellers who don't need a visa, such as citizens of many European countries, Australia, and New Zealand, will need an eTA before they can board their flight to Canada.

Applying for an eTA is done online through the official Government of Canada website. You will need a valid passport, a credit card for payment, and an email address. The application process is usually quick, and most applicants receive a decision within minutes. It is crucial to ensure all information provided is accurate, as errors can lead to delays or refusal. This authorization allows entry into Canada but does not guarantee admission; final decisions are made by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers upon arrival.

It's important to note that an eTA is not a visa and does not grant the holder the right to work or study in Canada. For purposes beyond short stays for tourism, business meetings, or transit, a visa or other specific authorization may be required. Always check the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for the most current requirements and eligibility criteria before planning your trip.
