Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows eligible international graduates from designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada to gain valuable Canadian work experience. This experience can be beneficial for future immigration applications, such as those under the Express Entry system. To be eligible for a PGWP, graduates must have successfully completed a program of study at a DLI that is at least eight months long and have maintained full-time student status. Since November 2024, applicants must also prove language proficiency — generally CLB 7 for university graduates and CLB 5 for most college graduates — and graduates of non-degree programs may need to have studied in a field on IRCC's eligible field-of-study list.

Applying for a PGWP requires specific documentation, including proof of graduation or successful completion of your program, and a valid study permit. The duration of the PGWP is typically equal to the length of the completed study program, up to a maximum of three years. It is crucial to apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation of program completion. The permit allows individuals to work for almost any employer in Canada, although some restrictions may apply based on the terms of the permit.
