Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)
The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) was a community-driven program designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller and remote communities across Canada. Participating communities recommended skilled workers with a local job offer for permanent residence, based on both federal criteria and community-specific requirements. The pilot is now closed: it stopped accepting new permanent residence applications on August 31, 2024. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to process applications that were submitted on or before that date.
The RNIP's successor is the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), launched on January 30, 2025, alongside a parallel Francophone Community Immigration Pilot. Like the RNIP, the RCIP is employer-driven and community-based: candidates need a job offer from a designated employer in one of the 14 participating communities and a recommendation from the local economic development organization before applying for permanent residence. Intake periods, priority occupations, and requirements vary by community and can change during the year.
If you see references to the RNIP in older guides or job postings, treat them as historical. Always confirm the current status of rural immigration pathways, participating communities, and eligibility criteria on the official IRCC website before planning an application.
