Spousal Sponsorship

Spousal Sponsorship is a key immigration pathway offered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their eligible spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada. To be eligible to sponsor, you must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Permanent residents must be living in Canada; Canadian citizens may sponsor from abroad if they plan to return to Canada once the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident. You must also demonstrate that you can financially support the sponsored person and any dependent children, and that you are not in a situation that would prohibit you from sponsoring, such as being bankrupt or having certain criminal convictions. The sponsored person must also meet admissibility requirements to Canada.

The application process involves submitting a comprehensive application package to IRCC, which includes documentation proving the relationship is genuine and photos. There are two main streams: 'Outland' sponsorship, where the sponsored partner lives outside Canada, and 'Inland' sponsorship, where the sponsored partner is already in Canada and eligible to apply from within. IRCC assesses both the sponsor's ability to support and the genuineness of the relationship. Successful applicants will receive confirmation of their permanent residence status, allowing them to live, work, and study in Canada permanently.
